CHAPTER 16

DANIEL

I FOUGHT VERY, VERY hard not to hold Eleanor’s hand all the way down those stairs again.

And before you think too highly of me, I wasn’t thinking only of holding her hand because it would make her feel better about going back down. I wasn’t thinking about catching her if she slipped or even giving her the comfort she’d managed to somehow find in the words of a guy who didn’t have one damn clue what he was doing or why.

I mean, those things were part of it. Obviously. I wanted her to feel better more than I thought I’d ever wanted anything in my life, and that was saying quite a bit considering I was the kid who had wanted to be in the hotel industry so badly that I’d started my own company from scratch and then forced it to grow in leaps and bounds until it started to fit the idea of what I’d wanted in the first place.

I wanted her to feel safe with me. More than that. ‘Want’ wasn’t a big enough word. It was more like... a bone-deep yearning that was controlling everything my body did at this point. Controlling the very thoughts that I thought, my ability to draw breath, my ability to think or feel anything at all.

It felt, and I mean this in a very real way, like my entire world had boiled down to that one point. Make her feel safe. Make her feel like she can trust me to keep her from falling — into the water or down the three hundred feet we’d climbed or anything else, for that matter.

I didn’t fully understand why I cared so much. I only knew that I did.

So yeah, I did want to hold her hand because something inside me said that it would make her feel better about the million and one steps we were going to have to go back down.

But a much bigger something inside of me wanted to hold her hand for the sheer joy of holding her hand. Feeling her smooth, soft skin against mine, holding that tiny palm against my own, threading my much-larger fingers through her delicate ones and never, ever letting go.

I hear you. I’d written myself off as completely crazy too, the moment I had that thought. Which was why I walked in front of her — the better to catch her if she did fall — but didn’t even try to grab for her hand.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, there was a completely separate part of my head that was actually screaming about how stupid it was to even think about holding her hand in the first place, given the fact that she was my fucking employee. That particular voice, though, had pretty much already given me up for dead after the last hour or so of outrageously romantic behavior on my part.

All in all, I was relatively glad we were going downward and staying on dry land from here on out, just so the universe would stop handing me opportunities to have to save the girl.
